After dealing with border bribes and bureaucratic hassles across Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, and Thailand, entering Malaysia felt completely different.
Honest Border Experience
For the first time in my multi-country journey, I approached a border without dreading extra payment demands. The Malaysian officials were genuinely professional – they checked my documents, asked standard questions, and stamped my passport. No bribes, no runaround. That’s how borders should work.
The police were remarkably friendly too, showing genuine interest in my cycling journey rather than treating me with suspicion. Their welcoming attitude immediately showed me Malaysia was a country that actually seemed happy to have visitors.

Taste of Home
The best surprise came with Malaysian food. After struggling with Vietnamese cuisine and surviving on basic meals across other countries, Malaysian food felt incredible. The curries reminded me of home – familiar flavors, spice levels, and preparation styles that satisfied my Indian taste buds.
For the first time since leaving India, I was eating food that didn’t require adjustment. Malaysian Indian cuisine became one of the highlights of my entire journey, making me genuinely excited about meals again instead of just seeing them as cycling fuel.
Journey Continues
With a properly stamped passport, no bribes paid, friendly officials, and delicious food ahead, Malaysia won me over within the first day. The fifth country in my six-country adventure was proving to be exactly what I needed after previous challenges.
Sometimes the best travel experiences come from simple things – honest officials, good food, and feeling welcome. Malaysia delivered all three from the start.
